Salmond, Alex
(1954– )
   Alex Salmond was elected as an MP for the Scottish National Party in 1987, serving as its leader between 1990 and 2000, and has been an MSP since 1999. He left the Scottish Parliament in 2001, but returned in 2007 and as party leader for a second time (2004– ) became the first nationalist to be elected First Minister of Scotland. He heads a minority government. Although fully committed to an independent Scotland, Alex Salmond antagonised some hard-line fundamentalists in the SNP by campaigning for devolution in 1997. As leader, he has been pragmatic, having moderated his onetime more leftwing views and steered the party towards adopting a gradualist – but still pro-independence – strategy.
